Lipids are a group of fatty substances that are important components of cells and sources of energy. This includes triglycerides and cholesterol. Triglycerides are the main lipid constituent in the blood. When you eat food, excess calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. If you consume more calories than you can use (primarily from sugar and carbohydrates) your triglyceride levels will become elevated. Elevated levels can lead to heart disease, diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and liver disease. Cholesterol is the basic building block of hormones like estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol and Vitamin D. Cholesterol is separated into total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL or "good" cholesterol) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol). Abnormal cholesterol levels can lead to heart disease, stroke and metabolic syndrome (a condition in which there are unhealthy ratios of cholesterol and triglycerides).
