The American Cancer Society recommends this screening for men and women starting at age 50. This screening is used to detect human hemoglobin in fecal specimens. It should be performed annually to detect colon cancer as symptoms may be limited to blood in the stool which is not typically visible. This test is also used for determining the cause of anemia or detecting conditions related to diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, polyps, adenomas, colorectal cancers or other gastro intestinal (GI) lesions that can bleed.
