Reticulocytes are newly produced, relatively immature red blood cells that develop in the bone marrow. The reticulocyte test evaluates the bone marrow's ability to produce RBC's. It is also used as a follow up to abnormal blood count tests; to identify and monitor anemia; and to follow up on treatments for iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12, folate deficiency anemia or renal (kidney) failure.
