Sickle cell anemia is a disease in which your body produces abnormally shaped red blood cells that don't last as long as normal round red blood cells. This abnormality leads to severe anemia and causes pain and organ damage. This test checks for hemoglobin S in blood. Hemoglobin S is a hemoglobin mutation. Its presence indicates that the person is carrying a sickle gene.

None; however, if this test is used for diagnosis, the sample should not be drawn after a recent blood transfusion.
