Once iron enters the body, it moves throughout the bloodstream by a protein called transferrin. Transferrin is a direct measure of the iron binding capacity. This test measures transferrin levels to identify iron deficiency anemia and helps distinguish it from anemia caused by chronic illness or inflammation.
