Uric acid is produced by the breakdown of purines which are found in the cells of the body and certain foods. Uric acid is typically removed from the body by the kidneys and is eliminated primarily through urine and the remainder in stool. If too much uric acid is produced and cannot be eliminated, it may cause gout. Gout causes pain in the joints as a result of uric acid crystals in the joint fluid causing inflammation. Uric acid can also form kidney stones.
