Cystatin C is a small protein produced by all nucleated cells. It is formed at a constant rate and filtered out by the glomeruli (i.e., blood vessels in the kidney). The rate at which fluid is filtered is called the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). If the kidney cannot properly filter the blood, there will be a decrease in GFR. As a result, increases in Cystatin C will occur because the kidney is not properly functioning. Cystatin C is becoming a more accepted test as it is unaffected by diet or high or low body mass. Thus, this test is may be more reliable than creatinine since creatinine depends on muscle mass. This test is a good assessment of the GFR and kidney dysfunction in patients with diabetes.
