Homocysteine is an amino acid. Vitamins B6, B12 and folate metabolize homocysteine. A deficiency in these vitamins may result in an increased homocysteine levels. Elevated levels have also been associated with heart attack, stroke and blood clot formation. Elevated homocysteine does not cause any symptoms but rather may be a risk factor for certain diseases.
