Magnesium is a mineral that is an essential electrolyte for energy production, muscle contraction, nerve function, maintenance of strong bones and supports a healthy immune system. It comes into the body through the diet and is stored in the bones, cells and tissues. Magnesium levels are checked as low levels may cause low levels of calcium and potassium. It is also checked as part of a nutritional panel to detect malnutrition. Symptoms of magnesium deficiency are malabsorption, diarrhea, weakness, twitching, cramping, confusion, cardiac arrhythmias and seizures. Increased levels of magnesium are seen with kidney failure, dehydration, Addison's disease, diabetic acidosis, hyperparathyroidism and hypothyroidism. Although the magnesium, serum test is most common, Magnesium, RBC may be more accurate especially in the case of magnesium deficiency and to assess the risk of cardiac arrhythmia or heart attack.
