Bilirubin is a byproduct of aging red blood cells and processed by the liver to allow its elimination in the body. Prior to entering the liver, it is called indirect or unconjugated. Once it enters liver, it is called direct or conjugated. Direct bilirubin is stored in the gallbladder and ultimately excreted. If the liver is damaged, it is not able to process bilirubin in this manner thus causing it to accumulate in the blood. This test measure bilirubin to diagnose and monitor liver and bile duct diseases and certain anemias such as sickle cell.
