Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver mostly caused by a virus known as viral hepatitis. The most common forms found in the U.S. are Hepatitis A (HAV), Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV). All three forms of viral hepatitis are highly contagious. HBV and HCV can cause chronic hepatitis. HAV is spread through water and food that have been contaminated. HBV is spread through blood and bodily fluids of an infected person. It is often spread through unprotected sex but can also be spread through infected needles, razors and toothbrushes. Mothers can also infect their baby in childbirth. HCV is spread through infected blood. The most common is through infected needles, including those used for injecting drugs, tattoos and body piercing. HCV can also be spread through unprotected sex. HBV and HCV if undetected and untreated can lead to serious problems such as liver damage, liver failure and liver cancer. This happens often as symptoms are either non-existent or last only a short time making this screening very important.
