Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein that binds tightly to testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and estradiol. Changes in SHBG levels can affect the amount of hormone available to be used by the body's tissues. SHBG is ordered primarily when the total testosterone results do not seem to be consistent with symptoms of low testosterone including infertility, erectile dysfunction and declined libido. The resulting information is helpful in evaluating a person with symptoms related to excess or deficient sex hormone production. This test, along with other sex hormones such as prolactin, estradiol and LH, assist in evaluating a person's overall hormone balance. For men, this test along with a testosterone test, helps evaluate infertility, decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction. For women, this test, along with a testosterone test helps identify and evaluate excess testosterone production, decreased SHBG, and evaluating women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
