ApoE is a lipoprotein which removes cholesterol from your blood stream. This test identifies variations in ApoE which affect cholesterol metabolism. The testing is often used to confirm a diagnosis of type III hyperlipoproteinemia (also known as familial dysbetalipoproteinemia) or if your health care provider suspects that you have an inherited component to your high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The test helps understand the role of genetic factors in cardiovascular disease and can evaluate the potential for the condition in other family members as well. The test may also be used for diagnosis and treatment of elevated lipid levels.
