B-Type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a cardiac biomarker and the test can be used to detect heart stress and damage. BNP is a protein which is produced by the heart. Increased levels indicate damage to the heart as this protein is released when the heart is working too hard and is under stress. Symptoms which indicate potential heart failure include shortness of breath, fatigue and swelling of the feet, ankles, legs and/or abdomen. These symptoms may indicate other conditions. This test can assist in differentiating heart failure from these other conditions such as lung disease.
