LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) carries the most cholesterol in the body and distributes it to cells and tissue. The amount of cholesterol carried by LDL is what is measured. High levels are associated with the risk of coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease which can lead to heart attack, stroke or blood clots. LDL can be measured directly or as a calculated value as part of a lipid profile.
