Omega-3 and Omega-6 are fatty acids that are not produced by the human body and must be consumed by diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for coagulation, muscle function, cellular transport, and cell division and growth. The ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids [e.g., arachidonic acid (AA)] strongly influences cardiovascular risk factors. Omega-6 fatty acids include some vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. The three major Omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Fish oil and fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and tuna are the primary dietary sources of EPA and DHA. This test provides measurements of EPA, DHA, and ALA and includes the omega-3 index, the omega-6/omega-3 ratio, and the EPA/ALA ratio.
