Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Levels are high in the morning and decline throughout the day. (This varies when a person has a unique sleep pattern, for example, the individual sleeps at different times on different days, night shifts, etc.). Cortisol plays an important role in the body including metabolizing proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, regulating blood pressure, controlling your sleep cycle, boosting energy when needed, and controlling inflammation. It is the body's main stress hormone and works with your brain to control your mood, motivation and fear (i.e., fight or flight). When cortisol levels are too high, it is an indication of Cushing's syndrome. When cortisol levels are too low, it is an indication of Addison's disease (primal adrenal insufficiency) or secondary adrenal insufficiency.
