Hemoglobin A1C (HgbA1C or A1C), or glycated hemoglobin, is hemoglobin with glucose attached. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The higher the glucose, the more A1C is formed. A higher A1C indicates poor blood sugar control and thus a higher increase in diabetes complications. This test measures your average blood sugar during the last two to three months.
