When your blood is placed in a tube, red blood cells (RBC) gradually settle to the bottom. Inflammation can cause the cells to clump which causes it to settle to the bottom more quickly. This test measures the distance RBC falls in one hour. Since this test can be affected by other conditions besides inflammation, it is typically used in conjunction with other tests such as the C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test.
