Iron is a mineral that comes from a balanced diet and is needed to make red blood cells. Once iron enters the body, it moves throughout the bloodstream by a protein called transferrin. Transferrin is produced by the liver. The Iron test will measure the amount of iron in the blood. The TIBC test measures the amount of iron that can be bound by proteins in the blood. Results are used to assess symptoms of iron deficiency, such as fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and weakness, or iron overload such as abdominal pain, joint pain, fatigue, loss of sex drive, heart problems, darkening of skin, and weight loss.
