Iron is a mineral that comes from a balanced diet and is needed to make red blood cells. It is an important part of hemoglobin. This test is usually ordered as a follow-up test when abnormal results are found in a routine test such as a CBC. This test is useful along with the TIBC test. In addition, it is often ordered with the transferrin test.

Preparation

Fasting (water only) for 12 hours prior to testing is required. Samples should be taken in the morning. Do not test during menstruation period.
