There are three (3) main forms of estrogen which are estrone (E1), estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3). Estradiol is the main estrogen and plays an important role throughout the menstrual cycle. It is produced by the ovaries, breasts and adrenal glands. The test is ordered to determine causes for precocious puberty (early puberty), abnormal menstrual periods, vaginal bleeding, infertility, to identify menopause stage or to review ovarian function and identify ovarian tumor. For males, the test may be ordered if a boy has delayed puberty or shows signs of feminization.
