Progesterone is a steroid hormone found in both males and females. However, its primary role is to help prepare a woman's body for pregnancy and regulate her menstrual cycle. A progesterone test is used to assess infertility, track ovulation, help identify an ectopic or failing pregnancy, monitor pregnancy, monitor progesterone replacement therapy, or help diagnose the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. Progesterone also supports bone density, protects breast and uterine cells and reduces hyperexcitability.
