Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland which is found at the base of the brain. Normally present in low amounts in men and non-pregnant women, prolactin's primary role is to promote lactation (breast milk production). A high level of this hormone is normal during pregnancy and after childbirth. This test is performed when there is unexplained headaches, visual impairment, unexplained breast nipple discharge, infertility (men and women), irregular menstrual periods, decreased sex drive in men, and low testosterone levels in men. High levels indicate prolactinomas, pituitary adenomas, hypothyroidism, diseases of the hypothalamus, renal (kidney) disease, and hepatic (liver) disease.
