Testosterone is an androgen steroid hormone. It is the primary sex hormone in males but it is present in females as well. Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein that binds tightly to testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and estradiol. Changes in SHBG levels can affect the amount of hormone available to be used by the body's tissues. SHBG is typically ordered when the testosterone test measurements are inconsistent with a patient's symptoms. This test measures total and free testosterone as well as the level of SHBG made by your liver.
