Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is characterized by inflammation and enlargement of the liver. HBV is transmitted when body fluid from a person infected enters the body of someone who is not infected through sexual contact; sharing needles, syringes, or other drug-injection equipment; or from mother to baby at birth. For some people, hepatitis B is an acute, or short-term, illness. For others, it can become a long-term, chronic infection which can lead to serious health issues like cirrhosis or liver cancer. Symptoms for acute illness include fever, fatigue, dark urine, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal pain. Someone with chronic hepatitis may not have any symptoms thus making this screening very important. The HBV vaccination is available to prevent infection.
