Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and is transmitted when body fluid from an infected person enters the body of someone who is not infected. This primarily occurs through sharing needles, syringes, or other drug-injection equipment. It is possible to transmit HCV during sex, but it is not common. For some people, hepatitis C is an acute, or short-term, illness. But for others, it can become a long-term, chronic infection which can lead to serious health issues like cirrhosis or liver cancer. There is currently no vaccine for HCV.
