Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is spread through sexual contact. It is caused by the herpes simplex virus which exists in two types, HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 typically causes blisters or "cold sores" around the mouth and HSV-2 causes lesions around the genital area. After the initial infection, the virus lies dormant in your body and can reactivate several times a year. Most people with the virus don’t have symptoms but can still be contagious and spread the disease to sex partners. There's no cure for genital herpes but medications can ease symptoms and reduce the risk of infecting others. This test is used screen for or diagnose infections with the HSV.
