HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), a life-threatening disease. Initially, an HIV infection may cause no symptoms or cause non-specific, flu-like symptoms. HIV attacks the immune system by destroying T-cells. HIV is spread through exposure to infected blood and bodily fluids. This is the recommended screening test for HIV and it detects both HIV antigen and antibodies. Antibodies are produced by your immune system when you’re exposed to bacteria or viruses like HIV. Antigens are foreign substances that cause your immune system to activate.
