Gonorrhea is a very common bacterial sexually transmitted disease (STD) and can cause serious complications if not treated. Gonorrhea testing identifies the bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, as the source of an infection. Symptoms from gonorrhea are often not noticeable and, if untreated, may cause reproductive and other serious health problems. Thus, the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend annual screening for sexually active women. The CDC also recommends that men who have sex with men should have annual screening. Heterosexual men with no symptoms do not need routine screening, however, sexually active men should consider periodic screening if they have multiple sex partners or there is a high indices of infection in their area. Screening for, diagnosing, and treating gonorrhea is essential in preventing complications and spread of the infection. Preparation

Do no urinate within one hour prior to collection. Female patients should not douche, cleanse the labial area prior to apply vaginal creams, prior to providing the specimen.
