Syphilis is an infection caused by the bacteria called Treponema Pallidum. This bacteria is spread during oral, anal, and genital sexual contact. There are four stages of Syphilis: Primary Stage, Secondary Stage, Latent and Late Stage. Untreated Syphilis can lead to long term health issues including dementia, blindness, paralysis, heart damage, liver damage, eye damage and brain damage. If you are pregnant you can pass the disease to your baby during pregnancy. In addition, the genital sores caused by syphilis can increase your chances of acquiring the HIV infection sexually. When being screened for Syphilis, the first test will look for the presence of non-treponemal antibodies. This test can have false positives due to other factors. If the non-treponemal antibody test is reactive, a second test will be run at no added charge to look for the presence of treponemal antibodies. This testing format is the current recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC recommends a syphilis screening for pregnant women during their first prenatal visit with their doctors. In addition, screening should take place for women in high risk pregnancies, individuals engaging in unprotected sex, partners of those who have tested positive for syphilis and commercial sex workers. Yearly screening is recommended by the CDC for men having sex with men; men who have sex in conjunction with illicit drug use; and men who have sex with partners that participate in sex in conjunction with illicit drug use.
