Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasite that causes urethra infections and inflammation of the prostate in men. These infections are common and curable. This trichomonas test detects the parasite in samples from the penis to diagnose an infection. Men typically have no symptoms but may have genital itching or irritation, burning after urination or ejaculation and/or penis discharge. Men should also be checked if a female partner has foul smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching or painful urination. Typically, this test is ordered with the chlamydia and gonorrhea tests as these STDs often occur together.
