The thyroid is an endocrine gland that controls metabolism and secretes hormones needed for growth and development. Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) develop when a person's immune system mistakenly targets components of the thyroid. Thyroglobulin antibodies (TGAb) target thyroglobulin which is the storage form of thyroid hormones. This test is ordered typically after an abnormal TSH and free T4 test or after other symptoms of thyroid issues arise. This test measures the levels of antibodies and helps to diagnose thyroid disorders.
